September 2009

Dear Malvern Red and Black Society members,

We did it!  The Malvern Pool is saved for another year, and in all likelihood, for the foreseeable future. Malvern parents, alumni and the Beach community raised over $12,000 in four weeks in May and June.  Together with a student levy and guaranteed permit rental fees, the total amount surpassed our goal for 2009/10 of $47,000.  Plans are being worked out to save more city pools for future years by the Aquatics Working Group chaired by David Crombie.  We will not need another ‘Save the Pool Campaign’. Thank you so much for your speedy response in June.

We can pat ourselves on the back for something else too.  The Fitness Centre, our school fundraising 2008 project, is now close to being fully funded, thanks in part to generous donations from parents and alumni. Thank you for donating to that too.

And there is a third piece of news.  In April 2009, the Onward Malvern Foundation finally received its charitable status from the Canadian Revenue Agency.  Until now our receipting has been done by the Toronto District School Board.  Now we can produce our own tax receipts.  If we owe you a receipt for your pool donation, please be patient.  We hope to have them out this fall.  We are, after all, volunteers!  Donors to the Malvern Red and Black Society can also get tax receipts through the OMF, so be sure to make out your cheques to the OMF with Malvern Red and Black Society on the memo line.

The Onward Malvern Foundation was established six years ago by a group of parents, alumni, teachers and friends of Malvern in the community to raise funds for the extras at the school that can make the difference between an adequate high school education and an excellent one.  We are referring to extra books for the library; help with sports tournaments and science fairs, the Pool, the Fitness Centre, drama, music and much more.  Private schools raise hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for such needs on top of their tuition fees.  We are not in that league, but we’ve proven that we can raise modest amounts from our constituencies to make Malvern a better place to study and grow in.

Have a look at the reply form below.  Please donate for the needs of the school or for the needs of the Malvern Red and Black Society using this form. Thank you very much.
